Cobalt is a hard, shiny silver-gray metal that can be naturally protected from oxidation (rust) by a passivating oxide film. Like nickel, cobalt can only exist in nature in a chemically bonded form (natural alloy). Pure cobalt can be produced by reduction smelting.

Cobalt alloy has corrosion resistance, heat resistance and wear resistance. This allows cobalt-based alloy castings to be used in many industries, including medical, aerospace, automotive, military and other applications where high strength is critical. For example, in the medical industry, cobalt-based investment castings are used to make orthopedic implants that do not wear out over time. Cobalt alloys are used in high friction bearing environments because of their strength and lubricity (or anti-wear quality). In high temperature environments, such as turbocharger turbines and jet turbines, cobalt alloys have good creep resistance and thermal fatigue resistance.
